Dear Members of the Colorado General Assembly,
We write to express our deep concern regarding Senate Bill 25-005, which threatens to upend Colorado’s long-standing Labor Peace Act, a bipartisan compromise that has effectively balanced the rights of workers and businesses for over 80 years. I urge you to vote NO on this proposed legislation to protect the financial autonomy of Colorado’s workers.
Under the Labor Peace Act and federal law, employees have the right to choose whether or not to join a union through a 50%+1 vote. To have the ability to deduct dues from paychecks, unions must secure the support of 75% of their members. This ensures that no worker is forced to contribute to causes they may not support. And as people vote with their dollars on everything from groceries to gas, it is an important form of expression that must be protected. SB25-005 would eliminate this safeguard, making it easier for special interests to deduct money from employees’ paychecks without their explicit consent and spend it without direct input. This is an affront to workplace freedom and personal choice.
Colorado workers cannot afford to have their paychecks raided by outside organizations. With the cost of living already at an all-time high—including added on fees by this legislature—every dollar counts. The average union dues in Colorado range from $550 to $1,100 per year per worker. This is money that hardworking Coloradans need for their families.
Furthermore, weakening the Labor Peace Act would make Colorado less attractive to job opportunities. With 55% of Colorado voters already believing that the economy is headed in the wrong direction, now is not the time to enact policies that further threaten our ability to thrive here.
Colorado has long been a leader in progressive labor protections that ensure worker safety and fairness without imposing unnecessary financial burdens. SB 25-005 is an unnecessary change that prioritizes special interests over the rights and livelihoods of hardworking Coloradans.
I urge you to stand with Colorado workers and vote NO on SB 25-005. Our paychecks, our choice—let’s keep it that way.
Sincerely,
We the undersigned
